In 1845, Joseph Faber, invented the Euphonia, which consisted of a head that spoke in a “weird, ghostly monotone” voice and was controlled with foot petals and a keyboard.

“By pumping air with the bellows … and manipulating a series of plates, chambers, and other apparatus the operator could make it speak any European language.”

Title: Winter
Artist:
Tori Amos

Album:
Little Earthquakes

“Snow can wait, I forgot my mittens. Wipe my nose, get my new boots on. I get a little warm in my heart when I think of winter. I put my hands in my father’s glove. I run off where the drifts get deeper. Sleeping Beauty, it drips me with a frown. I hear a voice, you must learn to stand up for yourself cause I can’t always be around. He says, ‘When you gonna make up your mind? When you gonna love you as much as I do? When you gonna make up your mind, cause things are gonna change so fast’. All the white horses are still in bed. I tell you that I’ll always want you near. You say that things change, my dear.”

This whole scene, a combination of stop-motion animation and what I’m pretty sure is a life-size animatronic figure (which quite honestly would’ve completely unnerved me if I were that actress who had to come face-to-face with it), was really impressive. If it had been done with CGI the scene would’ve elicited nothing more than an eyeroll at how bad it looked, given its vintage (1993). Yet here I was, 23 years later, stopping and backing up multiple times just to marvel at the work that must’ve gone into making this the most disturbing creature I’ve seen in years. Well done, Kamen Rider ZO.
